What is Regenerative Landscape Design?

A holistic approach to creating outdoor spaces that restore the health of degraded land. Developed through an intentional design process that prioritizes site observation and contextual analysis, the resulting landscape is a living system that rebuilds soil, supports biodiversity, and integrates water management. Employing this design technique will create resilience, abundance, and beauty in your yard that serves the needs of both you and the surrounding ecosystem.

Why Regenerative Landscapes?

We live in a changing world with a more volatile climate: hotter and dryer summers, shorter spring and autumn, heavier rainfalls, intensified storms, unpredictable temperatures. Therefore, we need to prioritize educated land use decisions to positively impact and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Every property has the power to make a difference. Each thoughtful decision made in your yard can contribute to rebuilding a healthy planet. If we all make one small contribution, together we will make a BIG impact.

Consultation

Starting with a consultation is a great way to get the conversation going about your landscape. Following a brief questionnaire and preliminary site research, we will visit your site (virtual or in-person) to assess the needs and goals for your space. We will provide design guidance or recommendations throughout our meeting. You will come away with a summary and clear path forward for your landscape.

Consultation fee: $75
Currently located in Chicago. Feasibility of in-person visits will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Design

After understanding the goals for your space, an in-depth site analysis will be performed to guide the design process. We will create a detailed design that functions within the context of your site while achieving your desired aesthetic. The design will outline various proposed elements such as planting beds, pathways, seating areas, and other landscape structures. Your design package will include a phased implementation guide with shopping lists and installation manuals for each respective phase.

This service is project specific. Cost varies project to project and will be outlined in a design proposal following a consultation.

Who am I & What am I all about?

Hi everyone, my name is Austin Gilkey, the founder of Golden Grove Design Co.!

I’m a landscape designer with a background in landscape architecture and permaculture design. Having design experience in residential landscapes, large public spaces, and master planning, my work blends holistic ecological systems thinking with thoughtful, beautiful design.

I believe, as humans, it is our duty to be stewards of the earth. The relationship between humans and the earth is reciprocal. If we do not take care of the earth, it will not take care of us. In a world filled with ecological and social destruction caused by human intervention, this work has never been more important. We need to do our part, as stewards of the earth, to regenerate our local ecosystems and rebuild communities.

With this said, this is very possible with minimal effort! It is simple— make educated land use decisions.

Instead of upgrading your home landscape to simply look like your neighbors, pause and ask yourself why first. Why do I want a big green lawn? Why do I want a line of flowering shrubs in front of my living room window? The answer is also simple: you want your yard to look nice and require little to no maintenance.

The great news is you can still achieve these goals while working with nature! There are beautiful flowering native plants that look stunning out your living room window. There are low-growing native species used as lawn alternatives that still provide green open space for recreation and require less mowing! By making these educated decisions, you are regenerating the land to support local fauna (i.e. birds & butterflies), improve disease & pest resistance, retain moisture & reduce additional watering needs, self-regulate weed pressure, etc… The list goes on!

Through holistic design processes, we can design and implement landscapes that serve you and your family’s needs, require little maintenance in the long run, and ultimately look beautiful.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore regenerative design or ready to take the next step in your yard, please reach out! I’m always happy to share ideas and collaborate!
